Towards an adapted ovalization system for flexible airfield pavement interface characterization using rolling-wheel or HWD loads

Monitoring pavement condition during its service life is paramount in order to antici-pate and optimize the potential maintenance work. For this purpose, different non-destructive techniques (NDT) are used to evaluate the structure distresses condition and to provide necessary information for the maintenance tasks. On their own, they are limited to give back a reliable assessment of the interface condition. The ovaliza-tion test developed in the 70s by the CEREMA (Centre d’étude et d’expertise sur les risques, l’environnement, la mobilité et l’aménagement) is an interesting comple-mentary method for that aim. It measures a core hole diameter variation through the pass of rolling wheel loads simultaneity in three horizontal directions (longitudinal (L), transverse (T) and 45° related to the loading direction). For the flexible airfield pavement needs under rolling and Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD) impulse loading, the existing ovalization equipments are limited. This paper presents two new prototypes. They simultaneous use displacement sensors positioned in the three identified plane directions previously mentioned and at several depths within the bi-tuminous layer. The first measurements performed under rolling wheel loads, pseudo-static plate loads and HWD dynamic impulse loads at the STAC’s full-scale airfield pavement test facility in Bonneuil (France) are presented. Experimental results are analyzed and compared to 3D finite element simulations.
