Function Evaluation on FPGAs using On-Line Arithmetic Polynomial Approximation

Abstract

This paper presents the first results of a young collaboration between ERMETIS and LIRMM on hardware arithmetic operators for digital control and digital signal processing. It presents on-line arithmetic operators for the polynomial approximation of some functions (e.g., reciprocal, square-root, sine, cosine, exponential, logarithm). The proposed method is based on polynomial approximations with sparse coefficients well suited for FPGA implementation.
