FES-based training and gait evaluation of strokepatients using a microsensor on their valid leg
Abstract
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) allows the generation of artificial movements in patients with motor disability. FES has been shown to be a valuable method for training stroke patients in early stage of hemiplegia in order to improve the recovery of walking skills. An accurate sequencing of muscle stimulation sequences is essential to obtain a good recovery. An important issue is the patient interaction with the artificial system through his valid limb motions. Our approach consists of placing movement sensors on subject's healthy leg in order to generate optimal muscle stimulations to be applied to the patients' muscles. Another important issue is the performance evaluation of the patient's gait.
